What is Scholar Gateway?

Scholar Gateway enables AI responses grounded in peer-reviewed sources with verifiable citations and DOI links. Instead of relying on general AI knowledge, Scholar Gateway searches current literature from more than 1,300 Wiley journals to deliver evidence-backed answers with complete source metadata. This enables you to verify claims and access the primary literature directly - ensuring your AI-assisted research meets professional research standards.*

*Access to full text may depend on your institutional or personal subscriptions

Getting started

AI assistants like Claude and Le Chat are trained for general conversation, not specifically for research. To get scholarly responses with proper citations, you need to provide context about who you are and what type of information you're seeking.

AI platforms handle context in different ways

a black gear with a star in the middle on a black background.

For Profile-based tools

Profile-based tools (like Claude) allow you to update your profile one time, and the LLM will use that profile in every interaction that follows.

Update your user preferences to include:

"I am a researcher studying [YOUR FIELD]. and expect responses to include proper source citations, especially for scientific literature."

a black background with three white lines on it.

For session-based tools

Session-based tools (like Le Chat) work best if you start each session by setting the context for who you are and what you are looking to achieve.

Start each session with a prompt like:

"I am a researcher studying [YOUR FIELD]. Please use Scholar Gateway to access academic sources and include linked citations and DOIs for all sources referenced."

Once you've established research context, you can ask questions naturally and get responses grounded in scholarly literature with working citations - transforming your AI tool into a powerful research assistant. See our use cases below for more relevant examples.

For the best outcome:

How does search work in Scholar Gateway?

a white arrow pointing down on a black background.

Scholar Gateway currently uses semantic search, which finds content based on concepts and meaning rather than exact keyword matches. Traditional keyword and phrase search capabilities will be added in future versions of the tool to enhance search capabilities.

Instead of searching for exact phrases like "machine learning AND bias" try prompting the AI by asking it a question, "what are the main approaches to addressing bias in machine learning algorithms?"

Remember, you're using Scholar Gateway through an AI assistant that is trained for general purpose use. To get the most out of the Scholar Gateway connector, provide context to the LLM about who you are and what you're looking for. Always include in your initial prompts that you're a researcher seeking information with proper citations and DOIs.

Why do I need to create an individual account?

What are the current limitations?

a white arrow pointing down on a black background.

Scholar Gateway has some current limitations we're actively working to improve:

  • Some queries may not automatically trigger Scholar Gateway - remember to specify that you want scholarly resources or to use Scholar Gateway when prompting your AI tool.
  • Content coverage currently derives from a limited set of articles (>3 million) from a selection of Wiley publications (> 1,300).
  • Scholar Gateway is currently available through Claude and Le Chat AI platforms, and you may need a Pro account to access the connector.
  • The current version focuses on semantic similarity search, which retrieves passages based on meaning rather than just matching keywords. This helps surface more contextually relevant results. We're planning to add additional search options as we expand functionality.
